Warm Weather Watch

Finally we have been seeing some beautiful warm weather in Regina that has stuck around!  While we all enjoy the sunny days outdoors with our pets, there are some things all animal owners need to be aware of when the 20+ Celsius temperatures arise.  Here are some tips to help you and your furry family members stay cool this summer:

1.  Be vigilant about not leaving your pets in the car!  Temperatures can soar quickly in a car on warm days.  Even with the windows down a bit it still can become unbearably hot - enough to cause heat stroke!  Signs of heat stroke in an animal can include: excessive panting and increased respiratory rate, hypersalivation, gums that are more red than normal, seizures, wobbliness when trying to walk, not producing a lot of urine, and muscle tremors only to name a few!  If your pet has been out in the heat and is exhibiting some of these symptoms, an examination by your veterinarian is recommended as soon as possible.

2. Be sure to offer your pet shade and the ability to get out of direct sun as well as lots of fresh water to help them cool down.

3. Swimming can be an excellent method of exercise as well as a great way to cool off!  Do beware though, that many boaters are out on the lake enjoying the water as well; if your dog loves to go for a swim consider a bright-colored water vest to make them visible to boaters in the water.  When out in deeper water with your smaller dog consider tying a "tether" line from your pet's water vest to your boat so they don't get too far or get swept away by large waves from boats passing by.  Here is photo of Dr. Ulmer out kayaking with her Miniature Dachshund Jezebelle!
